“January Jubilee”
2008 WSI Sports Clinic, Annual Meeting & Pizza Party!

Dozens of members, their families, and special guests attended the WSI Annual Member Meeting and Sports clinic. For the third year in a row, the event dubbed “January Jubilee” at the Wichita State University Heskett Center was a huge success. Members were able to experience a wide variety of what WSI offers throughout the year. WSI had their two handcycles on hand, and some members brought their own handcycles for other members to try out. Several young people took the opportunity to try them for the first time. Carol Keller from the Challenge Games was on hand to demonstrate a popular game, Boccia Ball. Members were able to learn how to play and network with others who enjoy the sport. Members from the Lawrence Wheelchair Basketball Team, Kansas Wheelhawks, made the trip to demonstrate and help drum up interest for, Wheelchair Basketball in the Wichita area. Teams of 5 scrimmaged throughout the day. Rod Nelson from the American Taekwondo Association was on hand with video demonstrations of Taekwondo for wheelchair users. He shared information available and is interested in getting wheelchair participants into Taekwondo classes.

Pizza and beverages were provided free of charge for all attendees. The business meeting included a presentation from the Wichita Challenge Aspen Fund-raiser of $20,000 to WSI!!! Challenge Aspen is an organization in Aspen Colorado that promotes mobility skiing. Many of our own members have been to Challenge Aspen. Local airplane companies, Raytheon and Hawker Beachcraft have participated in a fund-raising effort for this organization for the past several years. This year, a portion of those funds raised

During the meeting we also highlighted some of our key initiatives for this year:

Hockey Fundraiser:
The annual Hockey Game - "Thunder vs. Plunder" will be March 10th at the WSU Heskett Center.
Hockey practices are on Monday nights at 6:00 at the Heskett Center.

Skiing:
Snow - Challenge Aspen - Anyone interested in attending should contact Barney Hoss.
Water - Summer Splash - This is typically the 3rd weekend in July and is put on by Via Christi Lady of Our Lourdes. Stay posted to this site for more information.

Tennis Tournament:
The Air Capital Classic will be held on June 20-22 at Riverside Tennis Center. There will be a Tennis Clinic in April and lessons starting late April/early May.

Handcycling:
The Wichita Cyclefest is May 3 & 4. Last year we had participants from all over the nation. WSI has 2 handcycles for clinics and members to use.

Bowling:
The up/down bowling league runs September - April at The Alley. If you are interested in participating contact Dave Storm.

Basketball:
Need a coach and committed players to form a Wichita team.

Boccia:
If you are interested in Boccia please contact Carol Keller.

Taekwondo:
If you are interested in Taekwondo please contact Rod Nelson at (316) 393-3881.

It was decided by member vote that the 2008 Board Members for WSI are: Jenny Kreutzer, James
Watson, Tiffany Nickel, Rebecca Strickert, Adam Keiss, Robert Hammer, Wayne Romero, and Joe
Myers.
