February 19, 2008 Board Meeting Minutes
Attendees: Rebecca Strickert, Adam Kiess, James Watson, Tiffany Nickel, Robert Hammer, Wayne Romero, and Jenny Kreutzer. Guests: Mark Stever, Nick Taylor, Tara Froese
Minutes: Annual Meeting minutes were reviewed. Jenny will type up and distribute to the board.
Treasurer’s report:
- Current Profit/Expense Report – Rebecca currently working on financials and will email them to the group.
- Review final expense/profit sheet for WSI social and annual meeting
- Rebecca and Tiffany will look into CD and/or Money Market options. Want to explore options
Old Business
- Hockey fundraiser – date changed to March 17th; game time 7 p.m.
- Jersey = $60 each; price increased because we need higher quality of jerseys due to the fact The Thunder will be playing in the jerseys during the game prior to the fundraising event. Nick will send a revised
- Regulation Thunder hockey game March 16th at 5 p.m.; we need to get WSI members out to the event to show support of The Thunder for all they do for us. Jenny motioned that WSI members and their guests pay $5. WSI will fund the rest of the ticket price. It was 2nd by James. Jenny will send a postcard to our members publicizing the event. Need to have a headcount by Wednesday, March 12th. RSVP to Jenny by March 10th. Google checkout will close March 10th. Jenny will be at Will Call with the tickets. WSI can either pay via Google Checkout or cash to Jenny the night of the event. Need volunteers to man the table and sell tickets before, after, and during the game.
- Volunteers for fundraiser
- Setup – It was motioned by Jenny and 2nd by James to pay an Able Bodied resource familiar with the Heskett Center and surround systems, $75 to help Nick with the setup of the gym on Monday during the day. Other WSI resources will be on hand to help setup the gym. Other setup volunteers need to be at the gym by 5:30 to setup concessions, sell tickets, etc. Mark will check with his resources. Jenny will check with Boy Scouts of America.
- Concessions – Need someone to go get concessions. Must be Pepsi products. We will need a Boy Scout troop to man the concession booth. James and Tammy will also help with the concession booth.
- Tickets – Cost: $4 for adult, $2 for kids; Adam’s family will handle the ticket table (Google ticket sales will close March 16th).
- Auction – Rebecca will be on hand to help with the auction, writing receipts, etc.
- Clean up – Wayne, Mark, and others will be available to clean up.

- Jenny has the inventory of all sports chairs and their serial numbers.
- Website –
- Todd’s back. He will be putting new site up in the next month. It was motioned by Jenny and 2nd by Wayne to increase our hosting payments to Puppy Power from $9.95 to $14.95 for additional storage space.
- Briefly discussed paying James/Rebecca for running the site while Todd was out. This was not pursued.
- Marketing Material
- Promo CD – No update
- Display board – Jenny/LeRoy will take to Jet Digital Printing for a face lift
- It’s All Good video aired in January on PBS for Challenge Aspen fundraiser. Barney should receive a CD and it’d be good to include in the Promo CD.
- Trailer Purchase
- Per motion in October, we should move forward with purchasing a trailer, not to exceed $5000 (including gate adaptation, vinyl signage, and trailer). Mark will move forward with the purchase by April.
- Wichita Business Journal ads – No Update – Remove from agenda
- Grant Sub-Committee – Barney
- Children’s Miracle Network, Health Foundation, Tennis Grant, Spirit, Target

- James will follow up with Barney regarding this committee
- Handcycles
- May Event JohnsonGarden.com Race. May 3rd & 4th– See budget. Jenny moves and Rebecca 2nds that we accept a budget of $5000.
- Handcycle fundraiser – Discussed different options for dates. Rebecca will put a calendar of events together to see when it would make sense for us to have a ride fundraiser.
- WSI Laptop
- Possible Smartboard grant available for organizations such as WSI for technology. Tiffany will investigate and report next month.
- Boccia – Pittsburg event in April
- Currently this is on our website.
- Jenny will add a blurb to the hockey postcard directing people to the website for more information about this event.
- Thank you to Challenge Aspen Fundraising Committee
- Each board member who has attended Challenge Aspen should send two or three sentences to Tiffany to include in the thank you note about what the experience meant to you. Need that by the end of next week.
- Tiffany will contact Challenge Aspen to see about putting their logo on our website and tennis shirts as a sponsor.
New Business
- Paralympic Conference – April
- Registration, travel, etc for this event is approx. $1000.
- Event provides education on Paralympic events and processes.
- James will contact the organizers to see if scholarships are available.
- Wayne will contact his resources to see what information they have that we could use instead of attending this conference.
- Taekwondo
- Rod Nelson contacted us about organizing a Wheelchair Taekwondo group. He attended our annual meeting and had some interest. He has come up with a pricing strategy that includes a punch card – 5 lessons for $75.
- Rod is interested in soliciting a sponsor for this activity. His potential sponsor in the Wichita Boeing Credit Union. Board decided to encourage Rod to pursue the opportunity.
- Fundraising
- Packets and Mailings
- Board members were given packets and assigned potential donors to hand deliver requests to.
- Tiffany will send out the official donor request sheet later this month.
- Jenny will send everyone the Tax ID number in case grant/donation request forms require that.
- We have three levels of donors:
- Bronze: $200 - Sponsor information will be publicized on Tennis Tournament material and may participate in the Up/Down tournament
- Silver: $400 – Same as above plus, sponsor logo will be on all promotional material
- Gold: $600 – Same as above plus, sponsor logo/link will be put on our website for a year.
- Tennis Tournament, June 21-23
- Hotels – James will contact the Wichita Sports Commission. Possibly get a representative to attend our March meeting.
- Banquet Location - Grady checking into having the banquet at the ILRC and/or the Indoor courts at Riverside.
- Up/Down bowling donation
- Request for $300 – It was motioned by Jenny and 2nd by Rebecca to approve this request.
Misc
Wayne will be our go to person for mail pick up going forward
Jenny will follow up with Joe as to whether or not he will continue to participate on the board.
Barney is looking into getting a resource from Via Christi to serve on the board.
Hockey Tickets – Wayne (3); James (2); Robert (3); Adam (5); Rebecca (1); Jenny (3); Tiffany (2); Remaining tickets and cash box went with Wayne to give to Grady on Monday.
