September 19, 2006 Board Meeting Minutes

Attendees: Tiffany Nickel, James Watson, Jenny Kreutzer, Dennis Brungardt, Barney Hoss, Mark Seaver, Iggy. Special Guests: Tammy Watson and Dave Storm

July 06 Minutes: Minutes were unanimously approved as read.

Treasurer’s report: Dennis Brungardt has tendered his resignation from the board after this year.

Old Business:

  • Tennis Tournament—Thank Yous: Outback Steakhouse picture – Tiffany and Dennis B. to arrange.
    • Hotels: Need to look into new hotels for next year. Possibly Marriot Courtyard on 2nd and Mosley and Holiday Inn on Broadway. Tiffany will ask Heather from Wichita Sports Commission to begin looking into this for us.
    • Follow up Letters: Grady not here to discuss. Tiffany will talk to him off line.
    • Misc: In October, fundraising letters need to go out. This year we’ll target all WSI activities, not just tennis. Need to establish a fund raising campaign by next meeting. Everyone come prepared with campaign ideas. Jenny will bring laptop to craft and finalize ideas.
  • Equipment Storage and Care Procedures: As requested by the board, James has investigated this and has been able to price out storage units. One unit at Central and West will cost $60/month, with discount. Mark & Jenny questioned additional expense because equipment is already stored and no problems so far. Don’t see a reason for additional monthly expense. Topic tabled.
  • Business Cards distributed.
  • Bylaws-
    • Extended terms to 3 years and made some other minor modifications.
    • Mark will send out the notes from the meeting to the board prior to next meeting.
    • Board will need to read through them and approve next meeting.
    • Need Jenny and Dennis B.’s feedback
  • Bowling Extravaganza: Aug. 12 Countryside Lanes wrap up.
    • 3 people from WSI and 4 from wheelchair bowling league.
    • Need to make phone calls prior to events to get more people to come.
  • Tennis Practice: Dr. Ryan Moeller has been helping out. Next week is the last week.

New Business

  • Horseback riding: October 8th at 1:30. Mark made the arrangements and did the flyers. Mark to double check on horse and buggy. Mark in charge of meat/buns. Tiffany to do drinks. Jenny to do dessert. Barney and Denis Clary to bring Chips. Adults: $5 Kids: $2
  • Walk-n-roll Stroll-a-Thon: Saturday, October 14th. WSI will have a vendor booth setup. Mark to sit in the booth from 9 -10 a.m.; Tiffany from 10-11; Jenny to work from 11-tear down. Iggy volunteered to bring bike, but we decided to put a blurb on the web that says hand cycle is available to lease out.
  • Handcylcing events: None to report.
  • Venture Club: Tiffany will send Jenny a list of adaptive PE teachers and Jenny will send letters out and follow up with phone calls. Possibly have a pizza party. Jenny to ask Little Ceasars if they will donate pizza.
  • Website Maintenance: The question was asked whether or not James is prepared to take over website maintenance? After discussion, it was decided to continue with Todd. Todd does a lot of behind the scenes work that we don’t know how to do. He is doing a great job and we are getting our value out the work he is doing.
  • New Board Member Prospects: Shanda Brown
  • Dave Storm, coordinator of the WSI sponsored up/down bowling league was in attendance.
    • He has spoken with Dawson Grimsley to drum up more support/publicity. He hopes to work with Gordan Vatican, the WSU bowling team coach, to do a fundraising tournament to raise money for WSU and the Up/down league. He is requesting that WSI members come to support the tournament, when/if it is organized.
    • Eight bowlers from the league have put in a formal request for financing from WSI. They are willing to donate time. Discussion was had among the board regarding this request. Tiffany will put together a letter to send to the requestors, letting them know the criteria for requesting sponsorship. The board and Dave will have an opportunity to review the letter and then they will be sent to the requestors.
    • The up/down league is also requesting a annual donation. It was motioned by Dennis Brungardt and seconded by Mark Seaver to give $ to the bowling team.
    • Wheelchair basketball clinic: November 11 – 13
      • James to contact Grady about possibly doing a hand cycle clinic at the same time. WSI may help sponsor the tournament at the same time.

Next meeting: October 17th, 5:45 p.m. at Via Christi Rehab (OLOL).
